To become a notary public in California, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old

  • Be a legal resident of the state of California

  • Be able to read, write, and speak English

  • Not have been convicted of a felony or crime involving moral turpitude

  • Complete a six-hour notary public education course approved by the California Secretary of State

  • Pass a written exam administered by the California Secretary of State

  • Submit a completed application to the California Secretary of State along with the required fees

Once you have met these requirements and been appointed by the California Secretary of State, you must purchase a notary public bond and an official notary public seal. You must also maintain a record book and keep your contact information up to date with the California Secretary of State. The term of a Notary Public commission is four years, after which you will need to renew your Notary commission.
