ID Requirements for Notarization

As a California Notary Public, I must verify your identity before notarizing your document. Your ID must match the name on the document exactly or contain more identifying information—not less.

Name Matching Requirement:

  • Your ID can include additional middle names or initials, but it cannot have fewer names than what appears on the document.

✅ Acceptable Example:

  • ID: "Maria Guadalupe Gonzalez"

  • Document: "Maria Gonzalez"

  • ✔️ Allowed (ID contains more information, which is permitted.)

❌ Not Acceptable Example:

  • ID: "Maria Gonzalez"

  • Document: "Maria Guadalupe Gonzalez"

  • ⛔ Not Allowed (ID does not include the full name listed on the document.)

Expired ID Policy in California

  • ✔️ Allowed (Expired less than 5 years ago.)
