ID Requirements for Notarization
As a California Notary Public, I must verify your identity before notarizing your document. Your ID must match the name on the document exactly or contain more identifying information—not less.
Name Matching Requirement:
Your ID can include additional middle names or initials, but it cannot have fewer names than what appears on the document.
✅ Acceptable Example:
ID: "Maria Guadalupe Gonzalez"
Document: "Maria Gonzalez"
✔️ Allowed (ID contains more information, which is permitted.)
❌ Not Acceptable Example:
ID: "Maria Gonzalez"
Document: "Maria Guadalupe Gonzalez"
⛔ Not Allowed (ID does not include the full name listed on the document.)
Expired ID Policy in California
A California Notary can only accept an expired ID if it was issued within the last 5 years from the date of notarization.
Expired ID Examples:
✅ Acceptable Expired ID:
Today’s Date: February 6, 2025
ID Expired On: March 10, 2021
✔️ Allowed (Expired less than 5 years ago.)
❌ Not Acceptable Expired ID:
Today’s Date: February 6, 2025
ID Expired On: January 15, 2019
⛔ Not Allowed (Expired more than 5 years ago.)
